Who I am and Why I Can Help You Become a Better Rider
Hi, my name is Annette Willson and I’m a Physiotherapist, Pilate’s teacher, and Posture Specialist here in Australia. I have a Masters Degree in Physiotherapy. I am an elite horse rider.
I’ve been a Physiotherapist for over 28 years, a Pilates teacher for 10 years, and I’ve been studying and practicing “core stability training” for 30 years!

My Own Riding Story… And How I Can Help You Become a Better Rider
I used to be such a sloppy, unbalanced rider. I hated it because I was never able to do what I knew I was capable of.
I was not enjoying my riding at all, my skill was holding me back.
I began my riding career with all the problems I see in my students these days. I hated bouncing at the trot and getting poor comments in my dressage tests. I had a poor riding posture and was not effective with my aids. My photos reflected my bad posture. My horses jammed up under me.
I finally realized that if I didn’t make a change… I’d never reach the goals I had.
I spent money on lessons, but they didn’t help. The instructors could pick my problem but could not give me a solution, telling me to sit still didn’t help much…..telling me HOW TO SIT STILL would have been very useful. Isn’t this a familiar scene?
So you know what I did?
I used my education and experience as a Physiotherapist to explore the horse riding muscles and their function. I looked at my photos, I watched the top riders and I worked out which muscles came into use and when. I then tested myself for strength and flexibility. I detailed my problems and began to change my posture. I started to train myself to ride. I now have an effective, strong seat in the saddle. I trained my riding muscles for riding.
I quickly realized that control of the pelvis and the deep core muscles was the single most important skill to have to achieve ANY skill with riding… in any discipline.
I knew that if I strengthened my “riding muscles”… I’d be more stable, confident and I knew if I strengthened my “core”… I could stay still at the sit trot and hence ride any pace well. The bonus was I could ride any horse well!!! Guess what my back pain started to ease as well.
So I used my knowledge of physiotherapy to develop a specific group of exercises based on the Pilates concepts … and I applied them specifically to horse riders.
I started to really understand…. how to use specific muscle groups…. to feel and move with the horse. I quickly learned which parts of the body needed more strength and which parts needed more flexibility.
Little by little, I’d train my body using certain exercises to strengthen my core…my abs and lower back. I also stretched every day!!!
I’d dedicated a few minutes a day to practicing these exercises and techniques. The changes in the saddle came very quickly. It was amazing!! I exercised in front of the TV at the dinner table, at work, at the computer…..it was easy to fit in.
MY riding became so much better. My skills increased along with my confidence.
What’s even more amazing, these training techniques helped me eliminate my back pain!
It’s true! Since using these exercises… there was such a significant improvement in both my riding AND in how I felt. I felt rejuvenated and very excited about what I could now achieve as a rider.
I just practiced my exercises out of the saddle and then applied the movement patterns in the saddle…it was easy!
I Went On To Compete Up to International Level
in 3 day Eventing!
Finally, I had reached my goals and my dreams.
As I drastically improved my riding, other riders wanted to know who was teaching me to improve so fast. And they wanted to ride like me….I was told you pick Annette Willson out of a crowd easily because of her riding style…..this was a compliment by the way. ( A judge called me by name at a show once ….He said he’d recognize me on a horse anywhere.. I had not seen this judge for 15 years….WOW)
After thinking long and hard about it, I realized just how many riders I could help with my information. I knew I could train riders to rider better and show them how to become balanced and still in the saddle.
I started writing it all down and the Applied Posture Riding program was born.

There are so many great things about your program. First, you can literally LIVE on the ball. I have one at home and one at work which is fantastic because I can be doing exercise all day that simulates riding. Second, the way you describe the exercises is simple and easy to apply. Third, transferring things from ball to horse is a natural progression. So for anyone who only has 1 or 2 horses in work and has an office job this is ideal because you can literally be riding all day!
In general my overall strength has improved significantly over the last 6 months. I’d had a shoulder problem for the last 6 years and nothing seemed to give relief. Since starting the ball exercises the improvement has been amazing. It’s not completely better yet but it’s getting there. I haven’t had to take any pain killers for over 4 months. This was a problem I thought I was just going to have to live with for the rest of my life.

Valid to Horse Riders
Thank you for producing something so straightforward and valid to riders. I have been riding for 10 years and always had problems with balance especially at the sit trot. Of all the paces the……. sit trot…..is the most difficult movement to perform dignified and well.
Most riders bounce in the saddle, their legs flap against the horses’ side, their hands cling to the reins for balance and they tilt forward.
Many riders have difficulty keeping an upright posture through transitions and keeping their seat in the saddle at the canter.
When giving an aid, they bend their wrists, look down and lean forward. Their heels come up, their lower back stiffens. Their horse drops his shoulder, throws his head up and tightens his back.
Does THIS sound at all like your daily riding session?
Well, I have to tell you… good riding all starts with GOOD posture… and a good core…it’s what keeps your body upright and your legs still.
Is Poor Posture Negatively Affecting Your Riding?
In the picture on the left, you can see the typical slumped over shoulder posture. In the picture on the right you can see a better, more upright posture.
Well, did you know that many people, including horse riders, have poor basic standing posture and poor muscle control? This actually gets duplicated in the saddle, stopping riders from achieving a stable, coordinated deep seat.
Does your instructor use the following terms over and over each lesson?
- Look up
- Shoulders back
- Relax your back
- More leg
- More seat
- Keep your legs still, keep your body upright

- A forward head posture is a weakness in the neck flexors and a tightness in the neck extensors? This can cause headaches, neck pain and a head wobble in horse riders… especially at the sit trot.

- Tight chest muscles result in a slumped posture and round shoulders.

An example of some simple exercises to practice
The trot lessons teach you HOW TO use the specific muscle groups already trained on the ball… and transfer them in the saddle
- You’ll keep your lower leg still while rising… so it won’t swing out as you weight bear in the stirrups, when rising trot
- You’ll be able to sit still and move with the horse at the sit trot. This is the most sought after technique for riders and YOU’LL ACHIEVE IT.
- You’ll keep your lower leg under your hips with good control because you have trained your hamstrings on the ball.
- Your pelvis will move forward to rise and your body won’t tilt because you have co-ordination and strength.
- You’ll be balanced with your weight down through your heels. The trot lesson will teach you HOW TO achieve this.
- You’ll have good lower leg to rein balance, which is more leg, less rein. The ball exercise will have strengthened your upper body giving you good balance.
- You’ll be able to use your seat and legs to gain more impulsion without losing balance. Your horse will understand your aids.
- The sit trot will no longer be a dreaded pace.
- Your head won’t wobble.
- Your legs will stay solid and still in position.
- You’ll breathe in rhythm will the two beat pace.
- You won’t balance on your toes or hands.
- You will achieve an independent deep seat.
The canter lessons explain the use of specific muscle groups to teach you how to ride the canter perfectly
- You’ll feel the movement of your horses back as he rounds under your seat and enjoy the freedom of this movement.
- Your flexible pelvis and good core stability will make it easy to maintain that upright position. You won’t slump forward.
- You won’t bounce in the saddle or need to look down.
- You’ll feel the correct lead without looking.
- You’ll be able to use your inside leg independent of your outside leg to gain more bend.
- You’ll feel when your horse “drops his shoulder”.
- The canter will be comfortable, elegant and easy.
- You’ll achieve an independent deep seat.
After the Jumping rider lessons
- You’ll have a balanced strong lower leg.
- Your lower leg will stay in position over a fence.
- Your body will be able to move forward and back upright in time not “get behind”.
- Your heel will stay well down all the time.
- You’ll be able to apply a half halt in the “2 point” and “3 point” position.
- Your lower back won’t ache and fatigue as it used to.
